WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF FASHION DESIGN?

What is the importance of fashion design?

Well for starters—it keeps you warm and protected. Fashion design is the act of creating mindful designs that can have a specific aesthetic and beauty. It is truly an art form. According to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, fashion is not a necessity; one just needs anything adequate to cover themselves to simply survive.

However, when a society advances, everything surrounding it also advances as well. This of course is including the clothing we wear. Clothing not only serves as a zeitgeist, but also culturally how far we as a society have progressed. This especially holds true for different cultures. We can all learn a great deal about a culture from their past and present fashion.

Whether we admit it or not, fashion has been in our lives since we were young. Fashion has been dear to me since I was around 5 years old. It was around then I told my mother I did not want to wear dresses anymore and preferred pants (to which she happily obliged and did not force me to wear them). Growing up for me, there were the years of dressing like a tomboy, and then getting into the goth/punk/scene style in my teens, and then finally transitioning into a more feminine style in my early 20s to now.

Through it all, I made my own choices based on my comfort and what I liked and how I liked to present myself. And thankfully my family allowed me to do so. Fashion design not only shows the zeitgeist of society’s times, but also it is a way to showcase your own personal growth of your own soul. Because as we all know, what is the norm in a historical time period, doesn’t mean that it was the norm to some. For example, even though Abercrombie & Fitch was very popular in the early 2000s, it doesn’t mean everyone wanted or did dress in that brand/style.

This is why it is important to promote diversity in fashion design, even if you don’t like some of the designs. If I did not have access to the fashion I liked when I was younger, it definitely would have upset me greatly. Without using any words, fashion allowed me and everyone else to present ourselves in the most authentic way. This is why fashion designers shouldn’t get stuck on trends. Fashion is all about showing different lenses of art and self. If the designers stick to the status quo, then it makes it difficult for the designers themselves to show their authentic self and also makes it difficult to allow humanity to be themselves. Fashion design is about showing the different human experiences.

Overall, fashion is a monument to our history. When one wants to look to the past to learn of what was before our time, we should look at not only books and art, but fashion as well.

Love this! Really puts fashion into a different perspective and how it has changed through the years. Also why are we soul sisters? I also dressed a little punk at one point too! and going through the tom boy phase of wanting to wear pants only! Anyways, great post!
